Excitations in the dilute A_L lattice model: E_6, E_7 and E_8 mass spectra
On the basis of features observed in the exact perturbation approach solution
for the eigenspectrum of the dilute A_3 model, we propose expressions for
excitations in the dilute A_4 and A_6 models. Principally, we require that
these expressions satisfy the appropriate inversion relations. We demonstrate
that they give the expected E_7 and E_6 mass spectra, and universal amplitudes,
and agree with numerical expressions for the eigenvalues.Comment: 16 pages, Latex, Elsevier style file
OPserver: interactive online-computations of opacities and radiative accelerations
Codes to compute mean opacities and radiative accelerations for arbitrary
chemical mixtures using the Opacity Project recently revised data have been
restructured in a client--server architecture and transcribed as a subroutine
library. This implementation increases efficiency in stellar modelling where
element stratification due to diffusion processes is depth dependent, and thus
requires repeated fast opacity reestimates. Three user modes are provided to
fit different computing environments, namely a web browser, a local workstation
and a distributed grid.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
Ising tricriticality and the dilute A model
Some universal amplitude ratios appropriate to the peturbation
of the c=7/10 minimal field theory, the subleading magnetic perturbation of the
tricritical Ising model, are explicitly demonstrated in the dilute A model,
in regime 1.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX using iop macro
Driving and damping mechanisms in hybrid pressure-gravity modes pulsators
We study the energetic aspects of hybrid pressure-gravity modes pulsations.
The case of hybrid beta Cephei-SPB pulsators is considered with special
attention. In addition to the already known sensitivity of the driving
mechanism to the heavy elements mixture (mainly the iron abundance), we show
that the characteristics of the propagation and evanescent regions play also a
major role, determining the extension of the stable gap in the frequency domain
between the unstable low order pressure and high order gravity modes. Finally,
we consider the case of hybrid delta Sct-gamma Dor pulsators.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, in the proceedings of the Helas II Conference:

Magnetic Correlation Length and Universal Amplitude of the Lattice E_8 Ising Model
The perturbation approach is used to derive the exact correlation length
of the dilute A_L lattice models in regimes 1 and 2 for L odd. In regime
2 the A_3 model is the E_8 lattice realisation of the two-dimensional Ising
model in a magnetic field h at T=T_c. When combined with the singular part f_s
of the free energy the result for the A_3 model gives the universal amplitude
as in precise agreement with the result
obtained by Delfino and Mussardo via the form-factor bootstrap approach.Comment: 7 pages, Late
Large-scale Breit-Pauli R-matrix calculations for transition probabilities of Fe V
Ab initio theoretical calculations are reported for the electric (E1) dipole
allowed and intercombination fine structure transitions in Fe V using the
Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM) method. We obtain 3865 bound fine structure levels
of Fe V and oscillator strengths, Einstein A-coefficients and
line strengths. In addition to the relativistic effects, the intermediate
coupling calculations include extensive electron correlation effects that
represent the complex configuration interaction (CI). Fe V bound levels are
obtained with angular and spin symmetries and of the (e + Fe VI)
system such that = 5,3,1, 10, . The bound levels are
obtained as solutions of the Breit-Pauli (e + ion) Hamiltonian for each ,
and are designated according to the `collision' channel quantum numbers. A
major task has been the identification of these large number of bound fine
structure levels in terms of standard spectroscopic designations. A new scheme,
based on the analysis of quantum defects and channel wavefunctions, has been
developed. The identification scheme aims particularly to determine the
completeness of the results in terms of all possible bound levels for
applications to analysis of experimental measurements and plasma modeling. An
uncertainty of 10-20% for most transitions is estimated.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure, Physica Scripta (in press
The dilute A model, the E mass spectrum and the tricritical Ising model
The exact perturbation approach is used to derive the (seven) elementary
correlation lengths and related mass gaps of the two-dimensional dilute A
lattice model in regime 2- from the Bethe ansatz solution. This model provides
a realisation of the integrable perturbation of the c=7/10
conformal field theory, which is known to describe the off-critical thermal
behaviour of the tricritical Ising model. The E masses predicted from
purely elastic scattering theory follow in the approach to criticality.
Universal amplitudes for the tricritical Ising model are calculated.Comment: 24 pages, LaTeX, submitted to Journal of Mathematical Physics. One

Process for Upgrading Cognitive Assessment Capabilities Onboard the International Space Station
MOTIVATION: Spaceflight poses varied and unique risks to the brain and cognitive functioning including radiation exposure, sleep disturbance, fatigue, fluid shifts (increased intracranial pressure), toxin exposure, elevated carbon dioxide, and traumatic brain injury, among others. These potential threats to cognitive functioning are capable of degrading performance and compromising mission success. Furthermore, the threats may increase in severity, and new types of threats may emerge for longer duration exploration missions. This presentation will describe the process used to identify gaps in our current approach, evaluate best practices in cognitive assessment, and transition new cognitive assessment tools to operational use. OVERVIEW: Risks to brain health and performance posed by spaceflight missions require sensitive tools to assess cognitive functioning of astronauts in flight. The Spaceflight Cognitive Assessment Tool for Windows (WinSCAT) is the automated cognitive assessment tool currently deployed onboard the International Space Station (ISS). WinSCAT provides astronauts and flight surgeons with objective data to monitor neurocognitive functioning. WinSCAT assesses 5 discrete cognitive domains, is sensitive to changes in cognitive functioning, and was designed to be completed in less than 15 minutes. However, WinSCAT does not probe other areas of cognitive functioning that might be important to mission success. Researchers recently have developed batteries that may expand current capabilities, such as increased sensitivity to subtle fluctuations in cognitive functioning. Therefore, we engaged in a systematic process review in order to improve upon our current capabilities and incorporate new advances in cognitive assessment. This process included a literature review on newer measures of neurocognitive assessment, surveys of operational flight surgeons at NASA regarding needs and gaps in our capabilities, and expert panel review of candidate cognitive measures and assessment issues and procedures. SIGNIFICANCE: Our process and the results that flowed from it may be helpful to aeromedical professionals charged with transitioning research findings to operational use. Our specific findings regarding cognitive assessment tools are of significance to professionals who must assess readiness to perform in mission critical situations in environments involving threats to cognition and performanc
Highly Excited Core Resonances in Photoionization of Fe XVII : Implications for Plasma Opacities
A comprehensive study of high-accuracy photoionization cross sections is
carried out using the relativistic Breit-Pauli R-matrix (BPRM) method for (hnu
+ Fe XVII --> Fe XVIII + e). Owing to its importance in high-temperature
plasmas the calculations cover a large energy range, particularly the myriad
photoexciation-of-core (PEC) resonances including the n = 3 levels not
heretofore considered. The calculations employ a close coupling wave function
expansion of 60 levels of the core ion Fe XVIII ranging over a wide energy
range of nearly 900 eV between the n = 2 and n = 3 levels. Strong coupling
effects due to dipole transition arrays 2p^5 --> 2p^4 (3s,3d) manifest
themselves as large PEC resonances throughout this range, and enhance the
effective photoionization cross sections orders of magnitude above the
background. Comparisons with the erstwhile Opacity Project (OP) and other
previous calculations shows that the currently available cross sections
considerably underestimate the bound-free cross sections. A
level-identification scheme is used for spectroscopic designation of the 454
bound fine structure levels of Fe XVII. Level-specific photoionization cross
sections are computed for all levels. In addition, partial cross sections for
leaving the core ion Fe XVII in the ground state are also obtained. These
results should be relevant to modeling of astrophysical and laboratory plasma
sources requiring (i) photoionization rates, (ii) extensive
non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium models, (iii) total unified electron-ion
recombination rates including radiative and dielectronic recombination, and
(iv) plasma opacities. We particularly examine PEC and non-PEC resonance
strengths and emphasize their expanded role to incorporate inner-shell
excitations for improved opacities, as shown by the computed monochromatic
opacity of Fe XVII.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Physical Review A (in press
